Kindergarten
The Kindergarten curriculum at St. Mary of the Hills School aims at balancing relaxed play with structured work times that meet their academic, spiritual, social and emotional needs. Working in centers throughout the classroom provides each child with the opportunity to explore and be challenged in areas such as reading, writing, math, science, social studies and art. Students are also introduced to basic vocabulary in Spanish using games, songs, and hands-on activities.
First Grade
Our focus is on interrelated skills including language, comprehension, critical thinking, mathematics, problem-solving, and writing. Through the use of Wilson Foundations instruction and Open Court Reading, our students learn how to effectively gather information, apply it, and then use this information as the basis for new skills such as inference, analyzing, and critical thinking. We provide challenging and creative experiences that allow students to work individually and in groups. The Religion curriculum supplies a balance of Scripture, doctrine, and morality. It also includes the Church as a community and emphasizes celebrations. Vocabulary used in common prayers is discussed, and students learn the meaning behind each prayer.
